Open weekends and most holidays 9-5. Closed weekdays August through May. June and July open Tuesday through Friday 10am to 4pm. Presidents Hall of Fame is a classic Florida attraction. Founded as the wax museum House of Presidents in 1960, in 1990 it was expanded to include portions of world famous authentic miniature replicas of the White House and other representations of Americana by John and Jan Zweifel of Orlando, Florida.
Big Daddy Don Garlits began the museum in 1977. Today almost 175 vintage dragsters & antique cars call it home. From Swamp Rats 1-34 to the first motorcyle to break 200 mph it also includes the original timing clock from 1975 when Swamp Rat 22 ran 250.69 mph and 5.63 seconds in the quarter, a world record which held for seven years.
The Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala is one of the South's premier art repositories and education centers. Originally built to display and preserve the collection of Arthur I. Appleton, the museum's 30,000 square feet of gallery space has expanded to include traveling exhibitions. An additional 15,000 square feet is used for educational programs and cultural events. Discovery Science & Outdoor Center is a hands-on science and nature center, which serves community members of all ages. An emphasis is placed on physics, astronomy, meteroology, and human physiology intreactive exhibits. The Center is located in a beautiful twenty-three acre urban park. Included are a research library, late 1800’s Pioneer “Cracker” Settlement, and a circa 1930 one-room schoolhouse used by African-American students during segregation. Among the exhibits find a Mastadon, Sabre Tooth Tiger & Indian dugout canoe. Hands-on learning opportunities educate visitors about the cultural and natural history of Marion County.
